Starting out with dumb luck (Metroid Prime)

This venture started with the re-release of Metroid Prime in 2023, which happens to be my all-time favourite videogame. Being pretty bored and depressed at the time due to recent unemployment and other stuff going on, this came as a welcome relief. When I played it, I got immersed again like twenty years before, but also noticed an intriguing situation emerging from the world design of the game.

There is almost no place in the game where you can look outside the direct area you’re in.

Metroid Prime is beautifully designed and features a variety of lush engaging environments, but from a technical standpoint it’s just a string of interconnected rooms. Any background just suggests an extensive world behind every wall you see but it almost never really materializes. So situations like these really provoke my artistic curiosity – and I decided to draw an overview of the videogame and share the progress in a social media group dedicated to Metroid.

And this stuff really went viral… enough that I could start selling prints. So what do you know? I’ve found an artistic outlet that was both very much appreciated by a wide audience and that I enjoyed practicing very much. Tallon IV Map was the first in a series of artworks that felt uniquely fitting to my skills and interests. And after unemployment another path in life opened that I could pursue.
